Transforming Recovery: How Augmented Reality Helps Kids Heal Faster
When Snapchat approached us with a mission to support recovery for children post-surgery, we saw an opportunity to turn the rehabilitation process into a playful, healing journey. Designed for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, this project reimagines the hospital room as a captivating urban jungle, combining fun and physical therapy into one seamless experience.
Turning “Rehab” into Adventure
The biggest hurdle was engagement. Recovery exercises, like moving an arm repeatedly, are effective but monotonous, and they’re not enticing for young patients. Kids want to explore, play, and be entertained, not reminded that they’re working on mobility. The challenge was to create a rehab process that was as safe as it was engaging—turning small hospital rooms into spaces where kids would actually want to move and play.
