A Healing Journey through Augmented Reality

Using augmented reality (AR), we designed a paper-craft-inspired jungle where each level encourages a different type of movement. Every interaction was thoughtfully crafted to activate the patient’s body—whether it was a small step to “water a flower” or a raised hand to “welcome the sun.” As the children engage with each activity, their mobility gradually improves, transforming their room into a digital playground that boosts recovery time without feeling like therapy.

Safety and Immersion through Innovative Mapping

Ensuring the experience was immersive and safe required precise technology. LiDAR was our primary tool for spatial mapping, capturing each room’s dimensions and creating a digital overlay that perfectly fits the physical space. However, since not all devices support LiDAR, we developed an algorithm that detects surfaces based on texture and type. This innovation allowed us to mark hazardous areas—like windows or wiring—so children could move through the AR world freely, fully immersed in play, without risking their safety.

Faster Recovery through Playful Engagement

This prototype transformed the rehabilitation journey for young patients. By making recovery feel like an adventure, children not only enjoyed themselves but also reached critical mobility milestones more quickly, significantly improving their recovery time. With this project, Snapchat and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles have proven that technology, play, and healing can go hand in hand, creating a powerful impact on young lives in a way that feels as magical as it is therapeutic.
